Philosophy

Treatment provided at FamilyWorks of Ann Arbor is based on family systems theory, a model of practice which understands people in the context of their relationships, particularly those of their families of origin and the families of their own making. Using an ecological approach, the clinician recognizes that a person's experience is shaped by the exchange between that individual and his/her environment, a context which includes not only the family, but larger systems such as school, workplace, and neighborhood.

What Is Family?

"Family" in this context is broadly defined: it involves the traditional sense of family, meaning those related by marriage and kinship, but also includes a functional definition, meaning any set of people - and sometimes even pets - who intend to love and look after one another. A family therapist believes that individuals matter unto themselves, but also in relationship to others. Family structure, life stage, and story are important ingredients in this conceptual framework. The approach to clients is warm, respectful, and strength-based.
